Instagram Video: Tips, Tricks, and Best Practices

For Lawyers, Doctors, and Dentists

When Instagram first emerged on the social media scene in 2010, it was solely used to share photos with friends. However, like most social media platforms, Instagram has evolved greatly over the years and added videos to its repertoire. Although they started small (videos could only be a maximum of 15 seconds long), Instagram videos have grown exponentially since they were first introduced in 2013. In fact, within 24 hours of the introduction of Instagram videos, 5 million videos were uploaded to the app. And, as of last year, videos made up 33% of all content published to Instagram.

It’s no secret that videos can drastically help boost brand awareness, engagement, reach, and followers on your social media channels - ultimately leading to more leads. If you haven’t jumped on the Instagram video bandwagon yet, what are you waiting for? Below are a few basic tips, tricks, and best practices to help your brand get started (and succeed) with videos on Instagram.

Instagram Video 101

Uploading a video follows the same process as uploading photos. If your video is saved on your phone, simply add it by selecting the + icon at the bottom of the app. Additionally, you can record your video on the spot by selecting the + icon again and then selecting video. You can then adjust the video so that is fits the screen how you want.

Keep in mind that the maximum video length for Instagram videos is 60 seconds. If your video is longer than 60 seconds, you can use Instagram's Trim feature to edit it so it fits within the maximum length. You can then add a filter, location, tag other accounts, and share it to your other social media accounts (i.e. Facebook and Twitter) before sharing it on Instagram with your followers.

A couple things to keep in mind: You cannot record or upload videos from a desktop computer. Also, while Instagram does provide some editing capabilities such as trimming and filters, you may consider modifying your video with a video editing program that provides more options, such as Final Cut Pro or iMovie.

Make Your Video Stand Out

With the amount of videos being posted to Instagram these days, it’s imperative that yours stands out from the rest. Since 60 seconds is not much time to tell a meaningful story, try focusing your video on one specific topic instead of trying to cram too much in. For example, focus your video on the benefits of porcelain veneers, rather than trying to explain every cosmetic dentistry treatment.

Keep in mind that many people opt to watch videos with their sound turned off. You can still attract these viewers by simply adding captions or text throughout your video. While Instagram doesn’t allow you the option to add captions to your video once you upload it, there are numerous video editing programs available to help you do so.

When it comes to Instagram videos, the caption is key. You want your caption to be relevant to the video, but catchy enough to grab the viewer's attention while they scroll through their feed. Rely on clear call-to-actions to give direction on what you want them to do.

For example, if you are publishing a video about porcelain veneers, a good caption could be: “Unhappy with your smile? You’re not alone! Check out this video for the top 5 reasons you should consider porcelain veneers.” The caption is clear on what the video is about and why the viewer should watch it, without over-explaining the topic. (Pro tip: Using emojis in your Instagram captions can help boost engagement even more!)

Another great way to increase exposure for your Instagram video is to utilize hashtags in your posts. Hashtags are keywords for phrases written within a post or comment that help users search for relevant posts. Using hashtags in your post instantly makes it discoverable by every user on Instagram. While hashtags can be vital to the success of your Instagram video, don’t overuse them. Make sure your hashtags are short, to-the-point, and relevant to your videos topic.

Piggybacking off the previous example, a video explaining the benefits of porcelain veneers could use the hashtags: #cosmeticdentistry #porcelainveneers #veneers #loveyoursmile #happyteeth.

The Future Is Video

Instagram is currently one of the largest social media platforms, with more than 800 million active users, and it shows no signs of slowing down. With the amount of content being shared across the platform, it’s imperative that your posts stand out from the rest. Incorporating video into your Instagram strategy can significantly help increase engagement, brand awareness, and communicate your message to users in a more direct fashion.
