Instagram's New Business Features: What it Means for You

This past week Instagram announced its new business tools to come. It’s no doubt that in today's digital world, the visually pleasing social media platform that is Instagram continues to grow. With over 400 million active monthly users and 80 million photos posted per day, Instagram is one platform that brands are trying to utilize in their digital marketing strategies. Although this mobile only app has provided challenges for brands in the past, Instagram is making it a little bit easier for businesses to gauge success through the announcement of three new ‘tools’ that will allow businesses to target better and grow their following.

1: Business Profiles

Instagram will be launching business profiles which will allow users to easily recognize a business on the social platform. A business profile will allow businesses to choose how their customers can get in touch with them through call, text, or email them directly by simply tapping the contact button. There will be a feature that will also allow consumers to get directions directly from Instagram. This new contact button will allow businesses to keep track of incoming messages, inquiries, and possible leads through Instagram. The business pages will be categorized, similar to how Facebook categorizes business profiles now which will help new potential customers find businesses that they are looking for more quickly via Instagram. By adding a contact button, location link, and category companies will be able to free up some space in their existing bios to communicate other crucial information.

2: Insights and Analytics

Another new feature with Instagram for business is insights. In the past, there have been a limited number of insights and analytics provided by the photo sharing app. The new more dynamic insights on Instagram will give businesses more specific information about who their followers are, and how successful their posts are doing in comparison with others. Insights will help a business learn more about the behaviors and demographics of their audience to help them create more targeted and relevant content.

3: Promote

The final feature that will be included in the business profiles is the ability to ‘promote’ selected photos and videos. This will allow business accounts to turn any post that is already succeeding into an ad. After a post is posted, businesses will be able to add a call to action (CTA) button. This will encourage consumers to take that next step—whether it is visiting a website, downloading content, or filling out a form. When adding this CTA the business will have the option to select a target audience or allow Instagram to pick the targeting for them. The post will then be promoted as an ad for the length of time the company chooses.

 

Instagram allows a company to showcase their culture and their people in addition to products and services. These new tools will be valuable, in my opinion, for any business looking to engage and build brand awareness through social media; it will allow companies to measure success and reach out to new potential consumers. According to Instagram, they will be rolling out these new features in the coming months, and I am looking forward to these updates going live so we can continue to grow our client’s brand via Instagram while also directly engaging with consumers.These new tools will also allow us to provide our clients with measurable data on their Instagram results.
