Elements of a Comprehensive Design Call – Part 1

The first and most vital aspect to what your website will look like and contain comes from the design call. A design call is used to discuss particular specifications about your website.  As a designer, it is important to know what kind of site you would like. It also determines what kind of items are needed to build the site.  More often than not, projects are delayed due to missing or improper materials. During a design call, the Designer and Account Manager ask specific questions about other websites that were selected in which you may like or may not like. This is to help explore your opinion and highlight the strengths of your practice.

Items

Items that are obtained to create a website are used to help brand who you are and what you do. It also brings emotional impact and determines your goals on what you want your potential patients/clients to do next. Items that are discussed during a design call are used to create the image of the practice by creating new materials and incorporating existing ones.

These are vital materials that are needed in order to start the home page look and feel:

  1. Materials we need to obtain before the call:
    • Special Documents (client forms and contracts)
    • Collateral Materials (logos, business cards, before and after photos, bios, etc)
    • Videos
    • Sample Page Approval
  2. Design Elements:
    • color scheme preferences
    • graphics or images you want to incorporate
    • Taglines
    • Full Content
    • Professional and Personal Associations and Affiliations

Example Sites

In order to achieve a better understanding on the client’s opinion, sample sites are selected.  Sample sites are usually based on several factors that the client has discussed with the Account Manager prior to the call.

Selected Example websites are usually based on:

  • Your current site (likes and dislikes about it)
  • Competitor sites
  • Sites in the same field (local areas or nationwide)
  • Different site styles

These sites are used to as discussion topics to reveal the emotional impact that the client would like to create with their potential users.  Keep in mind that doing a design call is a very in-depth process. This is the time to make sure your business materials are all organized and supplied ahead of time to ensure a smooth and successful design call. Proper materials ensure effective questions and example sites to pull opinions from.
