The Why, Who and How of The World Wide Web

Part 1

I was recently asked to teach a thirty-week-long web course covering everything from basic html programming to Internet marketing and back. I took the offer knowing that the curriculum for the class needed to be reworked and wondered, “Just how the hell am I going to do this? What is the best way to teach web design?”

On Friday morning during a meeting with some of the other managers at Page 1 Solutions, our IT expert talked about knowing and understanding the principles of development architecture. While I hardly knew what he was talking about, I did gleam one very important thing from this – If you want to succeed in today’s ever changing world, you have to be a master of the principles, not the details.

Follow along with me…

The Why

When thinking about building or having a website built for you, you first have to ask yourself the Why question. Why do I want a website?

The answer to this has been studied and restudied and changes day-by-day. Ideally, the World Wide Web allows you to put your information, service or product in front of people all over the world. With over 1 billion people now online, the Internet has proven to be a viable marketing resource.

For over a decade now people have been trying to study the overall effectiveness of online marketing vs. other media. And much like print, radio and television advertising, it is very difficult to pin down absolute numbers and facts. What has been proven is that if you advertise, you increase your chances of getting more business.

Here is one fact however, online marketing and advertising is significantly cheaper then any other form of advertising media.

To me, that seems like a no-brainer for why you should do it. Bottom Line - If you have one dollar or one million dollars, by putting your money into the web you can get your information, product or service in front of more people.
