Your New Marketing Person

From time to time one of our clients hires a new marketing person that we're told to interface with. The client wants to expand their marketing horizons and trusts the marketing person to do what's in their best interests. Perfectly reasonable. We're happy to start working with the new contact, but more often than not, the new marketing person doesn't want to interface with us.

Without warning, regardless of how well the client's campaign is going, we receive notice that the client wants to cancel. This can be disastrous for the client. Most often this happens because the marketing person doesn't understand what we're doing. Occasionally, we're shocked to find out that the marketing person views the web as a waste of money. They want to move the marketing spending into yellow-page advertisements and other less effective media. Other times the marketing person has a web company that they are used to dealing with and want to switch everything over to them, even if things are going well and it may mean damaging the current results.

When hiring a marketing person, make sure that they will evaluate all of your current marketing before summarily dismissing everything and starting over with their own agenda. You have to be able to trust your marketing person to do what's in your best interests even if it's not a program that they're used to dealing with. Set up a meeting with your internet marketing company and your new marketing person, and have a discussion about where your marketing used to be, where it is now, and what new plans are on the horizon. Once everyone is well-informed about the situation you can then make a decision about whether you should keep doing what you're doing or make a change.

Be Careful Who You Work With

One of the big names in the legal community has come under scrutiny from Google. You really have to be careful about the types of programs that you engage in as part of your web marketing campaign. Remember, you don't want to trick the search engines into getting your website to show up on the search engines. You want to prove to the search engines that your website is a quality online resource worthy of 1st-page positioning on their websites.

Here are links to articles about the firm in question:

Website Video - Warning Re Ownership

web marketing video
Before you sign up with a company for website video - be that as part of a website design package or as a stand-alone service, be certain that you own all the rights to the video. I recently learned that a big name in our industries retains the rights to the .FLV files for their videos. .FLV files are important. These are Flash files that enable people to see your videos in your website. Without them, you're left with raw video files such as .mpeg files that require your website's visitors to have a video player installed on their computer in order to watch your videos. These players do not typically handle internet video very well, forcing the visitor to sit and wait for your video to download. You NEED your .FLV files. Afterall, isn't that part of what you paid for? Why invest in video only to have partial ownership of the files? Before you sign up, make sure that your videos are 100% yours.

Website Marketing at IACA

We recently attended the IACA convention in Orlando. We had a lot of great discussions with cosmetic dentists who were interested in improving their website marketing. Most of them had websites, but their websites were either outdated or just weren't showing up on the search engines for one reason or another.

We also were privileged enough to meet some of our clients face to face. This is a treat for us since we do most of our business by phone and email.
