Google Maps Bringing You Down?

Tired of your search results showing up on page 2 because of the Google Maps feature? Well, there is no longer a need to worry. Google has been incorporating the Maps feature directly into the search results, which brings back the 10 listings that you remember. If you do a search for your keywords or phrases, you may still see the Google Maps result at the top of the page, but if you keep watching those results, you'll notice the map beginning to disappear. I've noticed these changes slowly taking place throughout the last couple of months, so don't expect this to change in just a few hours. Just give it some time. It's all about Google giving their users the best search experience possible despite a few bumps along the road.

Signs by the Road

The other day while I was driving, I saw a sign similar to those we’ve all seen:

Work from home! Make $100,000-$500,000 a year! Housetrain your dog in one easy step! Get full-coverage insurance for just one penny per day! Become a Beauty Queen Instantly! Guaranteed to make Brad Pitt appear at your door in seconds and ask you to marry him!

You get the idea. There was a phone number at the bottom of the sign and, though the thought crossed my mind to write it down and give it a try, I didn’t.

If you were from another culture, possibly another planet, you may be shocked by my decision. But since we have all seen those signs and a few of us may have even called those numbers in the past, we know that it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. More importantly, it isn’t as simple as the sign makes it sound.

With an introduction like that, you probably think I’m going to warn about the evils of false or misleading advertising. Actually, I’m going to do the opposite.

(The opposite of promising something you can’t deliver on, is telling people about something proven to work.)

We have recently begun some campaigns for clients have been struggling with getting the numbers of their page-one search engine listings up. Based on the size and competitiveness of the client’s market, over the course of a month we submit one, two, or more electronic press releases to several sources with imbedded links back to the client’s site. When the source picks up the article and posts it, the link is made live and anyone reading that given article is able (and likely) to click on the link back to that client’s site.

As you know, inbound links are one of the many criteria search engines use to determine page rank. It was no surprise that these clients experienced an almost universal boost in their percentage of page-one search engine returns. What was a surprise to me was that the increases ranged from 3 to 17 percent! One client had 70 more listings on Google, Yahoo, and MSN than the month before. Across all search engines, they had 365 more first-page listings on designated keyword searches than 30 days before.

If I called you and told you that I could get you between fifty and three hundred more page-one listings than you currently have, wouldn’t you be tempted to take me up on the offer?

That’s just with one type of campaign.
