Google leveraging its power in search to increase Google+ activity
Thu, 12/29/2011
Whether or not you have registered for a Google+ account you’ll notice a slight change that could have a big impact. Many have contemplated how Google+ can differentiate itself from the popular social media platforms , Facebook and Twitter, and Google may have provided a glimpse of their strategy this Fall.
In November, Google began integrating Google+ brand page information in primary search results for certain brands that were eligible for ‘Google+ Direct Connect’ (see below for example). As you can see the Google + post integration will appear underneath the sitelinks.

One of the most significant outcomes of this integration is that brands that are eligible and utilize Google+ Direct will take up more space on the search results and push those brands that don’t further down the 1st page of results and in some cases into the 2nd page.
Obviously, this integrating of Google + brand page information into search results is an enticement for brands to join and be active on Google+ especially since valuable web page real estate is at stake. However, as of now the Google + integrated results only appear when you type in certain brand names such as AT&T and Toyota and not for certain keyword phrases such as cell phones and cars.
It’ll not only be interesting to monitor if the Google + integration begins showing up for certain keyword searches but vital in developing social media campaigns and SEO strategies because if the #1 search engine in the world begins to increase its preference for certain brands based on their utilization of social media platform you listen.
