What is "black hat" SEO?

Tue, 05/15/2012

I get asked by my clients all the time about black hat SEO.  What exactly is it, is there such thing as "grey hat" SEO, and does Page 1 use black hat techniques?  First and foremost, Page 1 Solutions will not participate in using black hat SEO techniques, and we make sure we are aware of the latest rules (and changes) so we stay within the boundaries of what's ethical and legal.

Black hat SEO is broadly defined as "techniques that are used to get high search rankings in an unethical manner".  Black hat SEO will usually include one or more of the following: breaking search engine rules and regulations, creating a poor user experience, unethically presenting content in order to fool search engine spiders and users.  Many SEO techniques that are now considered black hat used to be legit, but people abused the practices.  Black hat SEO can definitely provide short term gains including increased traffic and search engine rankings, but the risks heavily outweigh the rewards.  If found using black hat techniques, your site will be penalized by Google (or other search engines) which means that for a little short term gain, you will now have long term problems getting in the top 3-5 pages for the same search terms.

Although there are multitudes of black hat SEO techniques to avoid, below are some of the more popular ones:

Keyword stuffing: This means exactly what it sounds like; stuffing long lists of keywords (with no relevant other content) on pages of your site.

Invisible text: This includes adding lists of keywords in white text on a white background (or same colored text as the background) to attract more search engine spiders.  Eventually the search engines will find out, and the site will be penalized.

Doorway pages: These are basically "fake" pages that the user will never see.  They are designed specifically to trick the search engine spiders into ranking the site higher.  As search algorithms are updated constantly, search engines spiders are becoming smarter and are either ignoring doorway pages, or banning them.

Cloaking: This is a method of presenting different information to the end user (humans) and the search engines.  There are many many methods of using this strategy, so just keep in mind that you need to present the same info to both the human visitors and the search engines.

These are some of the most basic and widely used black hat techniques, but there are many, many more.  As stated before, black hat SEO will more than likely get you short term rankings and gains, but you will be found out and penalized sooner or later.  It's not worth it in the long run.  You can read an article here about one of the most famous black hat SEO blunders in the last few years involving JC Penny.

Get Attention - the Right Way!

Tue, 04/03/2012

Want to show off your latest and greatest?  Well attorney Tom Bradley of the Law Office of Thomas C. Bradley, recently won his latest case against Merrill Lynch.  With a $1.4 million win in a securities arbitration, we wanted to show off his case too.

When you have a new event, special, or win it’s great to get the word out by blogging, using social media, and if you haven’t done so already, put it on your website!  A great way to attract visitors to your accomplishments is to create a “call-to-action.”  This is usually done as a graphical element, a button if you will, that lets your visitors know that this is an important page.  Adding a separate element will give focus and keep your news from getting lost on your page.  It’s important to remember that you only want to pick your most important areas to use in calls-to-action, otherwise your design can become cluttered and may deter visitors from contacting you.

For Tom we created a “Current Cases” call-to-action.  Visitors will be able to find more information on his latest endeavors as well as read recently published articles including Tom’s recent award for Bobby Hayes against Merrill Lynch.

Visit the Law Office of Thomas C. Bradley to see learn more and see an example of a call-to-action, or contact Page 1 Solutions to find out more about adding your own call-to-action!

Some Points to Help Decide if Your Idea is Blog Worthy

Fri, 03/30/2012

Throughout my time at Page 1, clients are constantly asking me how to determine whether to post their idea to their Facebook page or to their blog….or both.  This is a great question and there is not always a black & white answer to it, but here are some basic guidelines that I came up with:

If you answer “yes” to the following questions, then I would suggest writing a blog post

1)    Do you have more than 140 characters to say about a specific topic?  Facebook will allow you to go over this limit, but Twitter will only allow this many characters.  I consider this a good guideline when determining if something is blog worthy.  If your idea is going to be over this limit or you have multiple ideas to share, then you should probably turn your idea into a blog post.

2)    Is your purpose to teach something to others?  Whether you want to share best practices on what to do after a car accident or what is the best take-home teeth whitening product, there is most likely enough information here to create a blog post.  If your idea is challenging enough to require “teaching”, then it is a big enough idea to write a blog post on.

3)    Will it take more than more than a minute or two to understand?  When it comes to Twitter or Facebook posts, most visitors will just scroll through your feed.  So, this doesn’t give you much time to get your point across.  If your idea is too hard to understand while browsing, you should incorporate it into a blog post.

Couple suggestions as to when Facebook and Twitter are the way to go

1)    When you have a quick or light-hearted comment about something going on in your business or practice.  You can use Facebook, Twitter (or other social media outlets) to say, “Happy Birthday to our Dental Hygienist Jessica!” or “Keep an eye out for Dr. Barach at the upcoming ASAPS meeting!”

2)    Anytime you are looking for some immediate feedback, engagement or reaction.  You could post something like “What do you think about the texting-while-driving laws?”  This is also a good opportunity to share upcoming specials, promotions, etc: “Refer a friend or family member to our office & you both receive $50.00 off any service!”

3)    If you have a picture that you want to do the talking for you.  Pictures and graphics are always a great item to add to blogs, but those are generally supplemental materials.  In a Tweet or Facebook post, they can be the main idea.  If you are a dentist and just completed a gum recontouring procedure, you could post a picture(s) with a comment like, “Here is Joe Smith after recontouring his gums.”

As I mentioned above, there is not always a black and white answer to when you should post on a specific platform, but these are some basic guidelines.  Also, there are ways in which you can cross-post your ideas!  You could write a blog post, and then Tweet about it with a link and/or post a link to it on your Facebook page.

New Premium Ads Come to Facebook

Mon, 03/19/2012

There were some big changes to Facebook’s paid ad services that have reported 5x to 10x more of a click through and a possible 3x increase of ROI. Facebook says the change is to evolve advertising from a message into a “story.”

Premium ads now show how many of your friends have already liked the advertiser. The ads are also bigger and pull in content from pages - similar to how it is pulled in from your newsfeed, rather than specific ad copy written independently for the ad. This is a BIG change, the days where you wrote specific copy for Facebook advertisements is now gone, which means you need to be sure your page content is saying what will make your brand sell! Facebook ads will also be visible to users that are logged out of Facebook.

With the premium ad changes they also launched Reach Generator. Reach Generator guarantees that your posts reach at least 75% of your fans. One of the biggest problems with content posted before this service was that posts usually were viewed by around 13% of fans.  Reach Generator is an added service that will get more engagement of fans and will also get added exposure of your brand to their family and friends.

The Good Guys Always Win in SEO

Is Black Hat SEO Fair?

How many times have you seen your competitor always ahead and on top of the search engines with thousands and thousands and thousands of links?  Are those links even legit or are they spam links to manipulate the search engine algorithms to look like they are a popular site?  Either way, it just doesn’t seem fair that those websites can over optimize their sites with spamy links and over-saturated keywords and still be ranked on top of Google.

What if Google made an algorithm that could find those sites that are doing black-hat SEO and penalize them?  Wouldn’t that be a great change of pace in the SEO world?  Now the good guys, after all of their ethical white-hat SEO efforts, would be rewarded with top positioning on the search engines.

It just so happens, Google has informed the public they are implementing this exact theory to penalize websites that are over-optimized with spamy links and SEO.  I want to make it clear that over-optimization does not mean you have too much SEO on your website.  Those sites that have constant updated content that is not over-saturated with keywords and is relevant to the site will still be considered good quality websites.  When it comes to link building, making sure links back to your site are about your industry and are relevant to your industry.  Let’s say you are a plastic surgeon with a website and you have a website about bowling balls linking back to the surgeons website, chances are your site will be flagged.  Google is finally cleaning up and taking out the trash.

Google has said this release should be effective within the next two months. So for all of those websites that have been manipulating the system to get top rankings, I highly suggest modifying your SEO strategy for when this update hits the internet.

Why You Shouldn't Write Your Own Web Content

Fri, 03/09/2012

Why you shouldn’t write your own web content (especially if you’re doing SEO):

  • You are too busy - you know it, we know it. Let the people you hire to do SEO do the writing too.
  • Writing for the web is different - on the web, people scan pages and they don’t spend much time doing it. Writing for websites is writing to fit in the maximum useful information in the minimum space and with the right presentation. Getting the right balance of short paragraphs, bullet points and headings is an art form that we know very well.
  • Writing for SEO is different too - you can’t keyword stuff and you can’t skip the keywords entirely. How much is too much or too little? Let your SEO company take care of it! Our writers work closely with optimization specialists to get the perfect balance in your content so that it reads nice to humans and search engines.
  • You know your business too well and you are too close to it - this one is hard: if you know your own business best, why can’t you write your own content? The fact is, an outsider can better distill your love into useful information for consumers. You might think that the exact type of brick used to build your awesome office is important, but the fact is, most of your customers don’t care (sorry!).
That being said, there are some times when you absolutely should write your own content! those are:
  • On your blog! Your blog is where your voice should be heard! You should definitely take a little time to write your own blog entries - especially because they can be short! Ask your IMC for tips on maximizing your blogs for SEO!
  • On Facebook! Your content on social media should be all your own - outsourcing social media is like outsourcing your front desk staff - you can’t make relationships with people you aren’t talking to yourself!

Google's Privacy Policy Update

Tue, 02/28/2012

In an effort to increase a custom search experience, Google is changing their privacy policy by tracking more of your internet activity.

If it is related to the internet, Google probably has a product or service that serves your needs.  Over the years Google has been expanding its reach on the internet by providing more services to meet the demands of the every-day user.  To date, each of these products had it's own privacy agreement but things are about to change.

As of March 1st, all Google product's tracking history will be shared between the different accounts to provide the customer a more personalized experience.  Google is expanding the platform which they recently took with their search engine to encompass all of the information which you have historically viewed.  Instead of just your past search results forecasting your future search results, Google will now take information from its other products including YouTube, Google Docs, Google Plus One, and any other account you may have with Google to customize your future search inquiries.

Not all Google users are fine with the change in the privacy policy and Google has created the ability for you to "turn off" the monitoring and tracking of your personal searches and history.  If you would like to prevent Google from sharing your personal search history, you can remove your Web History and indefinitely pause Google's tracking by following the simple steps below:

1) Sign into your Google Account

2) Type in the URL https://google.com/history or you can access Account Settings from the drop down menu in the top-right corner of any Google Product.

3) From the Account Settings page, locate the Services header and click "Go to Web History"

4) From this page, you will see a list of recent searches and sites visited.  Click the "Remove all Web History" button at the top of the page and then the O.K. button to clear your Web History.

These quick and easy steps will turn-off the tracking feature and pause it so that your future actions and search inquiries within Google are no longer tracked.  If you would like to every turn the feature back on to enable a more customized search, simply go back to your Account Settings page and click the blue "Resume" button to turn the tracking back on.
